The new Costco Anywhere Visa from Citi is a pretty nice all-around cashback card that offers an enhanced 2% cash back rewards at Costco over the old Costco branded AmEx card’s 1% cash back.
2% cash back is a big step up, but it’s nothing compared to the 5% cash back bonus rewards that the Chase Freedom Visa card is offering through the end of 2016 at wholesale clubs (including Sam’s Club, BJ’s, and even Costco). As of June 20th, Costco started accepting all Visa cards for payment, so you can use your Freedom card there now as well.
Chase does have a quarterly spend limit for the enhanced bonus categories of $1,500 per quarter. If you go over that, rewards cap out at 1% cash back. So, this promo alone probably is not worth signing up for the card.
In order to get the bonus categories, you have to activate the category online each quarter (July – September, and again in October – December). To do so:
- Log in to your account
- Go to the rewards page
- Look for the tab for bonuses with an option to activate
- Activate
Or, activate the bonus categories here. You must activate by September 14 to be eligible (if activated by then, it’s retroactive to the start of July).
The 5% bonus categories look like this for the rest of the year:
- July – September: restaurants, wholesale clubs
- October – December: holiday (TBA), wholesale clubs
Note: per the outlined terms, this does not include gas, fuel, wholesale club specialty service purchases such as travel, insurance, cell phone and home improvement.
This is NOT a sponsored or compensated post – just thought some Freedom cardholders out there (there are a lot of them) could benefit from the extra cash back in your pockets! Carry on…
